Fiona Wright
Former DC - Metropolitan Police
Fiona Wright joined the Metropolitan Police in 1972 and in 1974 she transferred to the CID. She spent most of her career as a detective. As a female officer, she found herself frequently updating families of any developments in murder and serious crime investigations, although the role of Family Liaison Officer (FLO) was not formalised until after the inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence.
In 2000 she was working at Scotland Yard for the Racial and Violent Crime Task Force (later to become the Diversity Directorate) when she was asked if she would consider being Family Liaison Officer for Stephen Lawrence’s father Neville. She met Neville and they both felt that they had a mutual understanding, so she was appointed. Her work consisted of keeping Neville appraised of anything relevant to the case, including any media attention. Their relationship remained professional until Fiona retired in June 2005, since when they have become friends.
