Retired Det Supt Julie Mackay

Julie Mackay spent over three decades in policing, the vast majority as a detective and with a passion for investigating homicides. She rose through the ranks to Detective Superintendent, culminating in leading the murder teams for three police forces. 

Julie has received commendations for bravery, working undercover and her leadership of complex investigations. Julie has also worked on the high-profile killings of Melanie Hall and Becky Watts, as well as a wide variety of other murder investigations including gang-related and domestic homicides, one-punch manslaughters and county lines killings.

She also received an international award for her work around DNA in the investigation involving Melanie Road. Julie co-wrote ‘To Hunt a Killer’ about this inquiry which she led for seven years while juggling other cases and bringing up teenage children.

Julie now works to help prevent future homicides and enjoys working in the media world bringing expertise to crime documentaries.
